Abstract:

Teriitutea Quesnot gets to the heart of the field by proposing a renewed conceptualization of geospatial data types that is more in line with the current conditions of their production on the web, where social networks now take the lion’s share. To the classic distinction between “data” – data digitized from the physical environment – and “capta” – data captured by web platforms, often without their users’ knowledge – he adds a third category, “quaesita”, whose purpose is to use algorithms to influence individuals’ spatial behavior. He then revisits the question of geospatial data through the concepts of Human-trace, trace-signs, geospatial traces, footprints and algorithmic spatiality. For him, the new techniques of augmented, diminished and mixed reality aim to superimpose these algorithmically calculated “quaesita”onto individuals’ perceptions in situ to influence their decisions.

  1. The genesis of geographic “data”.
  2.  Social web platforms and the proliferation of “capta”.
  3.  From geospatial footprints to geographic “quaesita”.
  4.  Deconstructing our (geo)digital footprints: pipe dreams and realities.

Abstract

The use of Internet and of the social networks leads the users to share data concerning their private life and their health. The consultation of many sites, the use of smartphones or computers leaves numerous traces on network which are logged and indexed thanks to the identifiers of the users. These data allow to build the profile of individuals what brings social consequences and exclusion. The Big Data is defined by computer scientists and from the point of view of economists and managers who show the advantages that companies can get from the exploitation of big repositories of data. The article presents the advantages and the limits of the use of clouds for the storage of personal data of health. Finally, elements solutions are proposed to preserve the respect of privacy.
